Joining the Health Sciences at York in 2019, Pete is a social scientist with interests across various fields, including health and climate change communication. Before joining York as a Research Fellow, Pete taught sociology for seven years at St Mary’s University and the University of Manchester. He is interested in research methodology and the application of social and critical theory.
Pete’s research interests are broadly based on communication and change. In particular, how wider social and material factors impact on processes of knowledge production, distribution, and consumption, and therefore the possibility of change, whether this is in health systems or in relation to an individual’s response to information about climate change.
Pete has worked on the Lancet Countdown on Health and Climate Change since 2019, first as Research Fellow in the Public and Political Engagement working group, now as an author within that group, working on research indicators analysing media and political engagement. Pete has also worked on multiple projects funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR), exploring public perceptions of climate change, public messaging around climate change, and local authority priorities for evidence around climate change. He is a member of the NIHR Public Health Policy Research Unit (PH-PRU).
Pete is project manager on MEASURE (Mixed Methods Evaluation of the high-volume low-complexity surgical hUb pRogrammE), and works predominantly on the qualitative components of the study.
Pete has an interest in social theory – particularly critical theory, cultural theory, and historical materialism – along with how this can be applied to healthcare innovation and processes of implementation.
Pete is also an active member of the department's Athena Swan working group.
