Profile

Biography

Paul is a senior Specialist Registrar in Public Health Medicine, currently in a collaborative role between the University of York and North Yorkshire Council. His primary objective is to bridge the gap between public health research and practice by employing a mixed methods approach to inform the development and evaluation of effective public health interventions.  His areas of expertise are food policy, obesity, air pollution and greenspace.

Career

Before joining the University of York, Paul investigated drivers of obesity as part of the NIHR-funded Obesity Policy Research Unit at the Centre for Food Policy (City, University of London); investigated links between obesity and advertising at the University of Warwick and worked as a senior policy adviser at both DEFRA and Toronto Public Health. 

Paul completed his doctoral studies at the University of Birmingham, examining impacts of climate change on pollination and food production.

Research

Overview

Paul's research focuses on the relationship between human health and the natural and built environment, with a particular focus on food policy, obesity, and greenspace. 

Paul is interested in doing policy-relevant public health research using mixed-methods approaches. His three main areas of interest are: the behavioural risk-factors for non-communicable disease (particularly diet); links between greenspace and health; and bridging the gap between public health research and practice to improve population health.
