Biography

Amar is Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery with academic faculty appointments at the University of York and the University of Oxford. He is a specialist shoulder surgeon based at the James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough. Amar holds the Mary Kinross Trust and Royal College of Surgeons Chair in Surgical Trials and Health Sciences, which is a joint appointment between Health Sciences and HYMS.  Amar runs a programme of clinical effectiveness research in trauma and orthopaedic surgery, attracting substantial funding from the National Institute for Health Research and funding for commercial research.  Amar is President of the British Elbow and Shoulder Society. Amar remains committed to promoting orthopaedic academia both regionally and nationally.

Research

Overview

Amar's main area of interest is clinical effectiveness research, typically large multi-centre clinical trials of orthopaedic surgical interventions. He also has wider research experience with previous published work on other research methods including systematic reviews, qualitative studies and cohort studies in the field of trauma and orthopaedic surgery.

• PROFHER:  UK-wide multi-centre randomised clinical trial of clinical and cost effectiveness of surgical versus non-surgical treatment of adults with displaced proximal humeral fractures
• UK FROST:  UK-wide multi-centre randomised clinical trial of clinical and cost effectiveness of interventions for treatment of frozen shoulder with a nested qualitative study
• HEALTH:  Multi-national randomised clinical trial comparing clinical effectiveness of total hip arthroplasty versus hemiarthroplasty for displaced intra-capsular hip fractures
• SWIFFT:  UK-wide multi-centre randomised clinical trial of surgical versus initial non-surgical management of acute scaphoid waist fractures in adults
• OPAL:  Occupational advice initiated prior to planned surgery for lower limb joint replacement
• UK TASH-D:  Analysis of risk factors for recurrence and predictors of outcome following surgical versus non-surgical management of first time anterior shoulder dislocation in young adults – analysis of CPRD data
• PROFHER 2: UK-wide multi-centre randomised clinical trial of clinical and cost effectiveness of reverse shoulder arthroplasty versus hemi-arthroplasty versus non-surgical treatment of older adults with displaced 3 and 4 part proximal humeral fractures
• HUSH: Humeral shaft fracture trial 
• PARCS: Patch augmented rotator cuff surgery
