Virtual Host Families
Some of our programmes include interaction with virtual host families. If you take part in such a programme, you will be allocated a host family that you will share with up to two other students.
Interaction with the family
You will have to arrange a time with the host family every week to speak to them through video chat (Zoom or Google Meet). Sessions will typically last between 30-45 minutes.
We recommend that you ask the family when they are available and agree on a time that works both for them and for all of you students sharing the same host family.
You will also have the opportunity to communicate with the family via email between two video chat sessions - this is really useful if you have any quick follow-up questions after you talked to them.
Make the most of the opportunity
Remember that you have limited time to speak to the families, so do prepare for these sessions and make the most out of them: speak!
Our host families are all very kind and supportive, and the video chats are quite informal. Students often call their host 'host mother' or 'host father' - so there's really nothing to be afraid of!
Shared interaction
Always involve all students who you share your host family with in all communication:
- You should only schedule video chats that are convenient for everyone involved;
- If you send emails, copy all the other students in on it so they are involved in all communication.
Introductions
Our host families will send you an introductory email - please answer them and introduce yourself.
You will receive emails from your host family to your University of York email account.
