Google Workspace
With your University IT account, you can use the full Google Workspace for Education.
You may be familiar with these either from your university studies or from using the public version of the Google Workspace.
Please familiarise yourself with these - there is a lot of help available from Google.
Gmail
Gmail is the email solution by Google. You can log in to your University of York inbox from gmail.com by typing in your full university email address (abc123@york.ac.uk format) and password.
If you need more help with setting up or using your email account, visit this detailed guide from our IT department.
Google Drive and Docs
Some of the materials we use will be shared via Google Drive and Docs. These are similar to organising your files in folders on your computer and creating documents using word processors like Microsoft Word - but everything is saved in the cloud.
Tip: Use the Share button in the top right corner of Google Docs to share files with others - you can work on the same document at the same time, comment on each others’ work, or even chat.
Google Classroom
Google Classroom is the online learning solution that is part of Google Workspace for Education. Most of the teaching and learning for your course will happen there.
For more information on using Google Classroom, visit our dedicated Google Classroom page.
Google Classroom
Google Meet is an online meeting tool from Google. You can use this to arrange meetings with other students - or anyone else who has a Google account.
Google Meet is available at meet.google.com and also directly from your Gmail account.
Jamboard
Jamboard is an online collaborative tool that you can use for planning and brainstorming with others (or even alone). It is essentially a large blank sheet that you can add post-it like notes or drawings to.
Saving your work after your studies
Please bear in mind that you will only have access to your University of York IT account and G Suite for the duration of your studies with us. We suggest that you save files (notes, handouts etc.) either into another Google account (by sharing files and folders) or download files individually either from the Google Drive or from Google Docs/Slides (File > Download).
