The UK-Jiangsu World-Class Universities Consortium
We are proud to be a founding member of the UK-Jiangsu World-Class Universities Consortium.
Launched in 2017, the Consortium is seen as a blueprint for UK-China research cooperation. Jointly spearheaded by the British Council, Universities UK, and the Jiangsu Provincial Department of Education, the Network consists of 16 UK universities and 32 universities from Jiangsu Province on the east coast of China. The UK Secretariat is held by the University of Liverpool.
The Consortium draws its impetus from the Chinese government’s ‘World-Class Universities and First-Class Disciplines’ initiative, which seeks to develop several of its institutions into world-class universities.

The Consortium's objectives are to:
- Build a platform that will deepen and broaden the level of strategic engagement and collaboration between universities in the UK and the Jiangsu Province
- Raise the profile of the higher education sector of the Jiangsu Province and the UK
- Harness multilateral cooperation as a mechanism to raise the quality and competitiveness of the participating institutions; sharing opportunities and addressing shared challenges together.
Research
The Consortium encourages many-to-many links between UK and Jiangsu members in the research areas of advanced manufacturing, environmental engineering, and health.
There is seed funding available on a rolling basis for research projects and academic workshops that involve at least two UK universities and two universities located in Jiangsu Province. Find out more about pump-priming opportunities: UK-Jiangsu Pump Priming Opportunities (PDF , 794kb).
Doctoral Training Centre in Dependable Autonomous Systems (DPAS)
Along with the University of Liverpool (lead) and Queen's University Belfast we have established a Doctoral Training Centre with three Jiangsu partners; Southeast University, Nanjing University of Science and Technology, and Soochow University.
The Centre will focus on the challenges of robot communication in future manufacturing environments. Professor Andy Tyrrell is the York lead.
Visiting researchers programme
The Jiangsu Province Department of Education (JPDE) provides funding for PhD students and Early Career Researchers to visit UK Consortium Members for up to one year.
Funding is £8,000 for a six-month PhD placement and £16,000 for a one-year ECR placement. This is a fantastic opportunity to host a talented researcher and build or strengthen research links with a partner university in the Jiangsu Province.
