Global opportunities by subject
York has study exchange partners all over the world. Browse global opportunities available to you as part of your degree programme below through the opportunities by subject links.
The Global Opportunities office is located in Derwent College (D/A/023) on Campus West and is open to visitors Tuesday-Thursday, 11am to 1pm (excluding vacation periods).
There are several things to consider when you are contemplating where to go abroad and what to do before you apply for a global opportunity.
Opportunities on our web pages are currently for exchanges available for study in 2025/26 and universities that require a foreign language are listed using the CEFR framework (A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2).
Brush up on your language skills before you go abroad by registering for a free Languages For International Mobility course.
Summer Abroad opportunities can also give you the chance to travel to different destinations across the world every year.

Definitions
When researching global programmes and placements you might hear the following options:
Credit-replacing means additional time is not added to your degree but your grades for modules passed at the partner university will be converted back to credit at York using a University of York Grade Conversion Table.
You can apply for credit-replacing Study Exchange once you have started studying in York. Applications will open in the Autumn Term for students to go abroad in the next academic year.
Most undergraduate students taking a study exchange as credit-replacing study apply in the first year, study abroad in the second year and then return for the third and final year.
If accepted on credit-replacing study exchange, you must discuss the grade conversion process with your department/supervisor prior to your departure.
Additional Year (also sometimes referred to as a ‘3+1’) is a four-year degree programme where your degree title specifically references the year abroad (or year in industry).
Students taking a study exchange as an additional year abroad usually have two years at York, the third year abroad and then return to York for the fourth and final year.
If you are going abroad on a programme with an additional year you must understand how you will be assessed for the time abroad prior to your departure. The assessment for this “additional” year will be confirmed by your department and you will need to speak to them about transferring onto this type of degree programme.
It is not possible to transfer onto an additional year programme if you have started a replacement credit year.
If you’re unsure which study abroad options are available to you, check with your Departmental International Officer, Personal Academic Supervisor or contact the Global Opportunities team.
Please note that the University of York does not permit travel to any country where the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) advise against all travel.
