I am a PhD student at York University, Environment and Geography Department since 2019. Before starting my PhD, I studied for a Bachelor Degree in Geography at Girl’s Education Collage in Jeddah City. Then, I studied a Master’s Degree in Urban Geography in 2009 at King Abdulaziz University in Jeddah City. The dissertation was on Squatter Settlements in Jeddah. The topic investigated the frame of determination of the concept of squatter areas, and the different factors that lead to their existence, to understand of the urban and population characteristics (economic and social) of the squatter areas, and linking these characteristics together, and explanation of their relationships. Then highlighting the most important problems of these areas, and an attempt to draw some solutions which can participate in the development of the urban environment of these areas.
My PhD project is in Urban Geography, by analysing the Urban Expansion and Land Cover Changes of Jeddah City in Saudi Arabia which involves analyze that by using GIS and remote sensing techniques. This study will deal with the urban expansion and land cover during the past 12 years and, accordingly, analyze and predict the urban expansion and land cover for the city until the year 2030. Moreover, the proposed study provides the governments' planners and decision-makers with a comprehensive overview of the urban development in Jeddah and help them in strategic planning. Saudi Arabia, like most countries, depend on GIS and remote sensing techniques to retrieve, classify and analyze the information needed to understand urbanization. The proposed study is intended to provide accurate and clear data for the government upon which dependable decisions could be taken. Besides, the data retrieved could be easily updated and developed. This project is funded by Jeddah University, Ministry of Education, Saudi Arabia, and is supervised by Dr Colin McClean and Dr Marco Sakai
