Writing at York

Writing at York banner

Writing is at the heart of English at York.

Our department has a strong tradition of supporting new writing, combining world-leading research with innovation in a range of forms. Our academic staff includes poets, novelists, scriptwriters, translators, and experts in other forms of professional writing, who have designed a unique curriculum to support writing development at all levels. The Writing at York programme also includes masterclasses with our Writer-in-Residence, Anthony V. Capildeo, who co-curates a full series of Writers at York events throughout each year.

Students are central to this thriving creative community, with its huge range of opportunities, societies, performances, and publications. Many of our graduates have gone on to successful careers in writing, publishing, or the wider creative industries. All of them leave York with an invaluable understanding of the ways in which creativity and communication shape our world.
