Thesis Title
Anti-Sedition Literature in England, 1536-1570
Supervisor(s):
Prof Brian Cummings
Description
Tudor governments and their supporters responded to every serious armed rebellion with rhetoric. Humanists inherited from Livy and Virgil the conviction that one of the best weapons against civil disobedience was the oration. As such, after every major rebellion in England authors from Richard Morison to Thomas Norton produced tracts to condemn sedition. My analysis of these tracts is informed by the methods of political historians and historians of ideas as well as literary scholars.
