Motherhood, Literature and Society in Indian Women's Writing
Dr Claire Chambers
I am a writing up year PhD student working on the representation ofmotherhood in Indian women's writing, paying particular attention to the works of Ashapurna Debi, Mahasweta Devi, Anita Desai, Shashi Deshpande, Jhumpa Lahiri and Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni. This project investigates how their literary representations both reflect and reconceptualise the notion of motherhood in terms of gender roles, femininity, female embodiment and mother-daughter relationships.
