Jonathan Brockbank

Biography

Jonathan studied English at Cambridge University and started working for the department in 1985.  Since then he has moved from mostly Early Modern teaching to Modern school, covering Victorian literature, American literature of the 19th- 21st century and his AOM ‘British Science Fiction and Fantasy, 1890s-1980s’.  His MA teaching has included Slavery, Labour and Human Rights and Science fiction.  His research interests involve  Ruskin and Morris, British female writers of the early to mid 20 th century, Westerns and Noirs, Yorkshire Social Realist writing (author and place), traditional music, song and culture of Britain and the USA and Godzilla.   He has published articles on Plough Monday celebrations in Cambridgeshire, Pearson’s online literary definitions guide, York-Press’ guide and podcast about A Streetcar Named Desire and a blog about Godzilla for the National Science museum.  He has done talks for schools and Yorkshire organisations such as the Ridings Group and Poppleton Arts. He is a musician for Ebor and Acorn Morris and the traditional dance band the Bad Bargain Band.   He has worked as musical director/musician/singer on productions by York Mystery Play Supporters’ Trust and York Shakespeare Project.
