Clare is based at the Centre for Women’s Studies and is also a member of the Department of English and Related Literature. She took up her post in 2017 after seven years as lecturer in German at the University of Hull.
Clare gained her BA in Modern and Medieval Languages (German and French) from the University of Cambridge in 2004, before going on to take an MA in Gender and Media Studies at the University of Sussex, returning to German Studies for a PhD at the University of Edinburgh, completed in 2009.
Clare’s background is in the humanities and, while her methodologies come largely from cultural and literary studies, her research has become increasingly interdisciplinary in the last few years. Research to date has focused on: terrorism and gender; violence, representation and gender; violence, subjectivity and affect/emotion; the field of perpetrator studies. She is also interested in the history of feminisms, particularly German feminisms; queer studies and feminist queer theory; subjectivity and narratives of the self; gender, sexuality and representation.
Clare is on the editorial board of the Journal of Perpetrator Studies.
