QS World Rankings by subject 2022
Department of English and Related Literature maintains its place as a UK top 10 Department.
This week the Department confirmed its place among the world's most highly regarded departments for the subject of English Literature and Language. The Department is ranked 8th in the UK and 28th in the world in the QS rankings.
Published annually since 2011, the QS World University rankings by subject highlight the world’s top universities in a range of popular subject areas. In 2022, QS ranked 1,543 institutions in total across 51 subjects in 5 subject areas. Universities are scored according to academic reputation, employer reputation and research impact (number of citations per year).
The Department is proud to maintain its global reputation for excellence. Professor Helen Smith, Head of Department, said: 'This ranking is a great testament to the Department's vibrant, international spirit. We're proud to welcome students from across the globe, and to study an extraordinary range of International literatures'.
In total, nine subjects at the University were ranked in the world top 100: Archaeology (18th), Education (71st), English Language and Literature (28th), History (top 100), Linguistics (91st), Philosophy (top 100), Psychology (77th), Social Policy and Administration (29th), and Sociology (83rd).
Within the UK, four subjects are in the top 10 - Archaeology (5th), English Language and Literature (8th), Linguistics (10th), and Social Policy and Administration (6th).
