Student Volunteers Awards 2021: Congratulations Ella and Madeline!

Every year, the University of York hosts the Awards, recognising student volunteers who have gone above and beyond to support the local community.  These awards were run as part of National Volunteers’ Week and, this year, we are proud to announce Ella and Madeline’s successes and tell you more about their achievements.

Ella volunteered for the charity, Move the Masses, and offered her time during the pandemic, supporting move-mates mentally and physically by supporting them to get outdoors and have somebody to talk to, really helping to boost their wellbeing.

Ella says, "I began volunteering with Move the Masses in November 2020, and it has been so beneficial to my university experience and my own mental health. Especially during the past few lockdowns, being able to get out and help others overcome isolation has been really rewarding. It has allowed me to meet people I otherwise never would, and shown me a whole new side of York!"

Madeline gave her time generously and co-created a set of History podcasts for GCSE and A-level students who wanted to go beyond the school curriculum.

Madeline says, “I had a really wonderful time creating the 'History Nerds Podcast' during the Spring term. Going in, I had no idea the range of experiences I would leave with. The podcast not only improved my interpersonal skills and introduced me to a great team of people, but my confidence with technology has developed enormously since. I have learned how to use many of the (often unexpected) tools needed to produce a podcast, but in a really fun and supportive way. For anyone interested in volunteering themselves I would strongly recommend it, even if you don't think you're from the right department or have the right expertise. It's a great forum for learning, and although I'm not a history student my passion for the project was enough to make me a valued member of the team.'
