National Student Survey 2020

We’re delighted to have some of the happiest English students in the UK.

The Department of English and Related Literature has received 92 per cent for 'Overall Satisfaction' in the 2020 National Student Survey (NSS).

The NSS is a nationwide survey of final-year students in higher and further education that encourages them to give honest feedback about a variety of aspects of their university experience. This helps prospective students make informed choices, and helps us to keep improving our students’ experiences.

The Department placed first among surveyed Russell Group universities for five of the nine areas, including ‘Assessment and Feedback’, ‘Learning Community’ and ‘Learning Resources’, and placed second in the Russell Group for overall satisfaction.

98 per cent of respondents agreed that 'staff are good at explaining things', and 96 per cent agreed that 'staff have made the subject interesting', while 93 per cent agreed with the statement 'I have been able to contact staff when I needed to' and 97 per cent agreed that 'the library resources have supported my learning well'. Overall, the Department received 96 per cent for ‘The teaching on my course’.

Dr Deborah Russell, the Department's Director of Undergraduate Teaching, said 'We are delighted with these results, which confirm our excellent reputation for teaching and learning. We're pleased that students find the course exciting and challenging, and that they also feel really well supported and part of a close-knit and inclusive community'.
