PhD Student wins J. Paul Hunter Prize

Congratulations to Jenny Buckley, who has been awarded the 2019 J. Paul Hunter Prize for the best graduate student paper given at the Daniel Defoe Society Biennial Conference.
Jenny's paper, "Mapping Defoe's Fictional Dialogues", was commended by the judges for its strong command of Defoe's fiction and its innovative focus.
Jenny's PhD thesis, Facts and Fictionality: Essay-Periodicals and Literary Novelty, addresses the influence of the periodical essay on the novel - and vice versa. It examines the development of fictional rhetoric, arguing that as these two distinctive media emerged in the complex print ecology of the early eighteenth century, they created a new mode of expression and blurred the boundaries between factual reportage and fictional stories.
