This week we confirmed our place among the UK’s most highly regarded departments for the study of English. We are ranked 8th in the UK in the Guardian university league tables for 2020, as well as 3rd in The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide and 5th in the Complete University Guide.
Head of Department, Professor Helen Smith, said “We’re delighted with this result, which amply confirms our place as one of the UK’s leading English departments, and recognises our ongoing efforts to ensure a superb student experience. We look forward to celebrating these results with our current students, and to welcoming a new cohort of brilliant undergraduates in September to enjoy everything the department has to offer”.
Published annually, the Guardian University Guide ranks 121 UK universities by undergraduate degree subjects according to: satisfaction with course, teaching, and feedback; student to staff ratio spend per student; entry tariff; career after six months of leaving the course; degree results compared to entry qualifications; and continuation of first year students.
The rankings are based on official data collected by the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) and the National Student Survey, published by HEFCE.
The Departments of Archaeology (7), Chemistry (4), History of Art (6), and Psychology (7) at York also rank in the UK top 10.
