A Writing Competition With a Difference

Posted on 29 April 2019

Submit a short story to this exciting competition, judged by English department staff and students, and get your words out and about on the streets of York.

A good story immerses you in the world of its characters. But how often do you get the chance to physically explore a story's setting while you're turning the pages? In collaboration with the York Festival of Ideas and Found Fiction, we are offering readers the chance to do just that - and it might be your story they enter into!

We're looking for stories of between 1,000 and 1,500 words, based on the Festival's theme, A World of WonderThe winning story will be used in an innovative event in which Festival attendees will be asked to search for extracts.

Hidden away somewhere in York city centre, the first extract will contain a clue which leads to the second, and so on, until all extracts are found. Participants will piece the story together, and share their experiences on social media, using #foundfiction, on the day of the event, Saturday 15th June 2019.

Submissions will be judged by a panel of students and staff from the Department of English and Related Literature. Dr Hannah Roche, a member of the judging panel, says: 'We're really looking forward to seeing how inventively writers can interpret the theme of 'A World of Wonder', and to the event itself. This is a really fun way to experiment with how we create and experience fiction - I can't wait to see the entries'.

To take part, send your submission to foundfiction@york.ac.uk by Friday 24th May.
