The Sir John Neale Prize is a prestigious essay prize awarded annually by the Institute of Historical Research.
Jon McGovern's winning essay, entitled 'Was Elizabethan England Really a Monarchical Republic?', revisited Patrick Collinson's famous theory with a critical eye and argued that Queen Elizabeth supervised the privy council more closely than her predecessors had.
The essay will be published in the journal Historical Research.
