English success in YUSU Awards

The Department of English scoops three prizes in this year's YUSU Excellence in Teaching and Supervision Awards.

The YUSU Awards are university-wide and recognise the highest quality in teaching and supervision, celebrating the exemplary work of our staff. Students are invited to nominate teachers and supervisors across several categories.

John Bowen got the accolade for Research Supervisor of the Year, with the comment ‘John has transformed my abilities as a scholar. His generous and unstinting attention to my work has improved its quality to a degree I could not have envisaged.’

Emma Kennedy won the prize for Outstanding Feedback, with a commendation that reads ‘She has been, by far, the most attentive tutor I have had at York, and our discussions and her feedback never fail to develop my studies. Both in quality and quantity, her feedback wins!’

Claire Westall was Highly Commended as Inspirational Lecturer, with the comment ‘Claire tells us that the intellectual minimum is never the place to aim for in university, or in life. I've never come across a student who does not admire her.’

David Attwell, Head of Department, comments, ‘These three awards, in lecturing, feedback, and research supervision, are a reflection of the wide-ranging strengths of the Department’s teaching. They were underscored by a large number of nominations in other categories. Congratulations to the nominees and winners, and thanks to all our staff for their creativity and dedication throughout the year.’
