Care, hope, resilience: permacrisis and the emojification of critical thought: an Exploratory Workshop
Event details
What is the connection between permacrisis and the contemporary proliferation of buzzwords denoting affective abstractions? Care, hope, resilience: ubiquitous in academic research and social commentary, these terms behave more like emojis than elements of systematic thought. Do they help us grasp the shifting imaginaries of the current state of permanent crisis, or limit the theoretical scope required to think our way out of it? In an intellectual environment struggling with radical geopolitical instabilities, is the emojification of critical thought the solution, or the problem? This Exploratory Workshop brings together scholars from Taiwan to the USA and Canada, Italy and Spain to the Baltic, working together to understand the intellectual registers of criticism and research emerging in response to the world-wide ‘troubles’ of contemporary academic and public life.
