What are monuments? How do we recognise them? Who or what do they commemorate, and why? What do we want to see commemorated in our communities today, and how should we go about it?
Join a group of University of York researchers from Art History, Archaeology and English and Related Literature, as they explore the monument in all its forms, from the stained glass to blue plaques, from statues to gardens.
This day-long workshop will be hosted in the
Spurriergate Centre, a space filled with monuments of all kinds, which we'll be exploring as part of the morning session. Then, after a break for lunch and a walk down Coney Street, we'll think about other forms of monument in the wider city and beyond, touching on topics such as decolonisation, environmental concerns, community engagement, and plans for the future. Bring your ideas and creativity as we explore monuments together!
Tea and coffee will be provided throughout the day, and there'll be an hour's break for lunch (feel free to bring your own). The heating will be on in Spurriergate but do wrap up warm as it's an old building!!
We're looking forward to seeing you there!
