Reframing Varda

Agnès Varda is one of the most important filmmakers in European cinema. She received multiple awards, including the Palme d’or at Cannes, the Légion d’honneur, and an Academy Honorary Award - the first female director to do so. Her name is associated with aesthetic experimentation, documentary realism, self-portraiture, overt political activism, and feminism. She is recognised as a key auteure engagée of the twentieth and early-twenty-first century, creating films that intervene in the social and political crises of contemporary France and Western Europe.  Her cinécriture is unique in the multiplicity of its forms and modes of inter/intra-action with film as both medium and milieu. This conference will open new perspectives on Varda’s work, examining it in its aesthetic, ethical, social, cultural, political and historical contexts.
