The Song of Youth is a collection of eight short stories in which Catalan author Montserrat Roig (1946-1991) keeps alive the troubled times of the fascist regime of Franco, as they were experienced in Catalonia. In Roig's fiction, Franco's brutal ruling of Spain from the 1930s to the 1970s is not avoided but looked at directly and critically, always through a feminist lense, offering a political committment to social justice.
‘Montserrat Roig, before her untimely death, was a shining light of Catalan literature. The stories in ‘The Song of Youth’ show her at her most urgent, energetic and inventive. While most of the stories are clearly set in the Catalonia of the 1970s and 1980s, they also have the quality of timeless fable.’ — Colm Tóibín
