Sylvia Townsend Warner and the Possibilities of Freedom

This paper explores the long literary life of Sylvia Townsend Warner (1893-1978). It considers reasons why her work may have been undervalued and neglected, and offers the idea of 'possibilities of freedom' as a perspective on her writings. In exploring this idea the paper will suggest a trajectory across Warner's career, touching first on her best-known novel Lolly Willowes (1926), and continuing with brief readings of her narrative poem Opus 7 (1931), and of three short stories, 'Mutton's Only House' (1943), 'To Come So Far' (1947), and 'The Young Sailor' (1954).
