Early Modern Printing Workshop

Professor Helen Smith, Head of the Department of English and Related Literature, will explore with you the sometimes vexed ways in which Shakespeare’s plays became books, and will open up some revealing insights into the unexpected, entertaining, or just plain puzzling things that happened to Shakespeare’s plays and poems in the printing house. But don't expect to just settle back and enjoy the lecture – this is a practical letterpress workshop, housed at Thin Ice Press, the department’s on-site printing studio. You will spend the afternoon getting to grips with type, ink, rollers, and all the terminology of the printing house, in order to produce a unique Shakespeare print to take home.

 

The workshop will include a light lunch, tea and coffee, and all the materials needed to create your print.
