Magical Realism: The Making of a Global Literature and International Anthology

Magical realism is one of the most established and popular forms of international writing. From Gabriel García Márquez’s One Hundred Years of Solitude to Yann Martel’s Life of Pi, which was adapted into a hit movie, magical realism continues to entrance and entertain. But what exactly makes a work of fiction magical realist? What does the term mean? And why do writers of magical realism frequently have a political message for authoritarian or repressive regimes? Cambridge’s Dr Christopher Warnes answers these questions and more, and talks about his upcoming landmark anthology on magical realism as a global literary phenomenon.
