'Europe' is a pressing concern for Britain, for the EU, for the larger European region and globally. This Lightening Rod session aims to stimulate and connect interdisciplinary research on Europe’s past, present and future, none of which can be understood in isolation from each other. Colleagues working in subjects as diverse as art history, economics, environment, film, health sciences, history, management, medieval studies, poetry and politics have a stake in 'Europe' and the university is well-placed to pursue innovative cross-faculty research in this field.
The Lightening Rod session will begin with short contributions from Dr Nicole Lindstrom (Politics), Dr Hugo Service (History), Dr Simon Sweeney (Management) and Professor Elizabeth Tyler (English and Medieval Studies). These contributions will be followed by open discussion. Please do come along with your ideas about how we can pursue research about 'Europe' at York.
Lightning Rods is a forum for ideas which cross the boundaries between different areas of expertise within and beyond the Humanities Research Centre. The purpose of Lightning Rods is to open a conversation which starts from a book, film, event or idea which has had effects, repercussions, and a kind of electrical energy, in different areas of knowledge and research.
