Monday 15 May 2017, 6.00PM to 7.00pm
Shakespeare set Hamlet in Elsinore. The castle at Elsinore (Kronborg Castle) has since made the play its own. As appearances by John Gielgud, Laurence Olivier, Richard Burton, Christopher Plummer, Michael Redgrave, Derek Jacobi, Kenneth Branagh and Jude Law attest, it has become a badge of honour to play Hamlet there. In this illustrated talk, Dr Anne Sophie Refskou (University of Surrey) and Lars Romann Engel (Artistic Director of Hamletscenen in Elsinore) discuss the lively history of Hamlet in Denmark, tracing how Shakespeare’s fictional setting for Hamlet has become a real one.
With a Shakespearean musical introduction from the Ebor Singers.
Attended by the Danish Ambassador, Claus Grube.
