Moving Images: Between Photography and Film in Contemporary Art

This paper will consider the role of moving images in contemporary art. Focusing on artists who have turned to photography and film in their practice, it will discuss how these modes of visual representation and image-production are marshalled in order to explore ideas about time and movement, and to stage an encounter between the past and present. From the pre-cinematic silhouette panoramas of Kara Walker to William Kentridge’s ‘stone-age’ animation to Oscar Muñoz’s intermedial photographs, these moving images betray an abiding interest in photographic and filmic technologies. A key question that this paper will address is how moving images in contemporary art engage with individual and collective memory, often at the conjunction of historical trauma and personal loss.
