Staff and students in English come from a range of different backgrounds and countries and we thrive as a result of our diverse community. As a Department, English is committed to ensuring that all staff and students from all backgrounds feel welcome and supported during their time at York. The English Equality and Diversity Group remit covers all protected characteristics including ethnicity and race.
The University of York’s Staff Race Equality Forum is Chaired by Dr Avtar Matharu. Complete the online form if you wish to get involved, or contact Avtar (avtar.matharu@york.ac.uk)
In 2020, the Department established a Race and Representation working group to coordinate work on ensuring gold standard pedagogy on teaching a diverse curriculum. The group is comprised of English staff and students with a particular interest in diversity and inclusive teaching.
The Library and Archives have created a fantastic resource Your Library, Your Voice, which includes a growing range of reading lists on equality and diversity, the first of which focuses on the Black Lives Matter movement (and related issues of racism and decolonising education). Our Decolonising Network feeds suggestions back to the library from our literary salons.
