A Postgraduate Day Conference at the King's Manor, University of York
Saturday 2nd November 2002
CENTRE FOR EIGHTEENTH CENTURY STUDIES/THE BRITISH ASSOCIATION FOR ROMANTIC STUDIES
Conference organiser: James Disley
This year the BARS Postgraduate Conference will be held at the University of York in the King's Manor, a historic building in the centre of the city and home to the University's Centre for Eighteenth Century Studies. This one-day conference aims to bring postgraduates together from across the UK and around the globe in order to share thoughts on life as a postgraduate Romanticist and discuss a range of ideas generated by the theme of 'Romantic Performances.' Interpreting the conference theme liberally, papers will be concerned with a wide range of literary texts, from dramas to lyrics, newspapers to diaries, and an interdisciplinary approach is encouraged.
Some of the specific topics to be addressed include:
- Society and tragic form
- Theatrical biography in the nineteenth-century periodical
- The performance of selfhood
- Dramatic spectacle on the stage and in the Royal Academy exhibition
- The theatricality of the radical press
- Musico-dramatic tropes in dramatic poetry
- The Byronic Hero
- The relation between canonical writers and the popular theatre
- Stage silence and the dramatisation of thought
- Shakespeare and the Romantic critic
Lunch with wine will be held in the King's Manor Refectory. The day will conclude with an open discussion of the themes of the conference and any other relevant matters. After the close of the conference, the University of York CECS Postgraduate Group will host an informal social gathering, which all delegates are warmly encouraged to attend.
