Inaugural lecture: Professor Jan Hardman

We celebrated Jan Hardman's professorship at her inaugural lecture, which took place on 16 June in the Church Lane Building.

Her talk was entitled 'Is classroom talk central to learning? Yes, but...'.

The lecture explored the concept of classroom dialogue and how it can play a pivotal role in bridging surface and deep learning, bringing about an inclusive and engaging learning atmosphere, and improving educational attainment.

Drawing on her own observational research and randomised controlled trials, Jan evidences the positive impact of classroom dialogue and a dialogic pedagogy on learning, and explains the implications for teaching.
