The basic qualification is an Honours Degree (2:2 or above) or a degree equivalent. In line with government requirements for initial teacher training, all entrants to the course must have qualifications in English language and Mathematics (and Science for Primary) at GCE O-level or GCSE (grade C/level 4 or above), or hold equivalent qualifications in these subjects. You will need to bring evidence of all necessary qualifications in the form of original certificates to your interview.
In assessing the appropriateness of degree courses where the degree title does not match a teaching subject, an applicant must be able to demonstrate that the degree contains sufficient study of the teaching subject. If you have any queries about your qualifications and suitability for a PGCE course, please consult the subject-specific pages on the left and get in contact with any queries.
Applications are welcomed from candidates who have done some teaching or have been employed in some other occupation, or who have done some voluntary service, either in this country or abroad.
Subject knowledge enhancement courses are offered in a range of subjects by agencies outside of the university and offer an opportunity to refresh or expand your subject knowledge in advance of starting a PGCE course.
Applications are welcomed from all minority groups. The University has an Equal Opportunities Policy in place to ensure fairness in its approach to all students.
If the evidence you present at interview is judged later by our Admissions Team not to be equivalent to GCE O-level or GCSE grade C/Level 4 or you are unable to provide evidence that you have obtained a standard equivalent to Maths and/or English Language GCSE, a condition of any offer you are made will be that you pass a GCSE equivalency test in English and/or Mathematics.
If you do not currently have GCSE equivalence in Maths, English Language or Science, we are happy to offer you an equivalency test. Please contact the Department of Education PGCE Admissions team at education-pgce-admissions@york.ac.uk.
Equivalency tests are held within the Department and are marked in accordance with current GCSE mark scheme requirements. Unfortunately, we are not able to offer resits.
University staff, school teachers and education partners are involved in selection and interviewing. This includes a presentation, individual and group tasks and a subject knowledge test for secondary applicants, as well as a personal interview so you are able to show your strengths and we are able to get a comprehensive understanding of you. No applicant will be admitted to the course without an interview.
Please note that all Lead Partner interviews will be carried out by Lead Partner colleagues. Please contact them if you would like more information about their interview process.
