I’m the Associate Tutor for the Mathematics PGCE course here at York University. My role involves designing and delivering sessions to develop trainee’s confidence in teaching a range of mathematical concepts in a way that is accessible and engaging for students. I also support trainees whilst on placement, recruit and interview potential trainees and am constantly looking for ways in which we can enhance the PGCE experience.
In addition to this role I have taught secondary mathematics for over 15 years across a range of high performing schools and currently work at a local secondary school as Key Stage 3 Lead. As part of this role I support our primary to secondary transition which allows me to get a comprehensive understanding of students' experience of maths across Key Stages. To further develop this transition I have conducted a range of cross phase projects and research which I have previously presented at the BCME conference. I’ve also conducted further research into effective teaching methods as part of my Masters in Education. This research, in combination with reflecting on my own day to day practice helps to shape the sessions I deliver.
To support my knowledge of curriculum and assessment I’m an examiner for both GCSE and SATs qualifications and have been for over 10 years.
Alongside my work at school and university I am also the Assistant Maths Hub Lead at the Yorkshire Ridings Maths Hub. As part of this role I am a qualified NCETM PD Lead and a Secondary Mastery Specialist which supports me to work collaboratively with other local secondary maths teachers and departments to develop Teaching for Mastery in their own settings.
I really enjoy bringing this range of experience and knowledge to the PGCE trainees and being part of their development into the next generation of mathematics teachers.
