I am a Lecturer in Mental Health and Wellbeing in Education within the Department of Education at the University of York.
I completed an MSc in Psychological Research Methods, and my PhD at the University of Strathclyde. Prior to joining the department in August 2021, I was formerly a Senior Lecturer in psychology at York St John University. My research interests focus on children and adolescents experiences of bullying, and the relationship between bullying and poor mental health.
Within the department I am the course lead for the BSc Psychology in Education programme (BPS accredited) and teach across a number of modules on our undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.
My research interests broadly focus on understanding children and adolescents’ experiences of bullying. My current research focuses on examining the relationship between such experiences and poor mental health. I’m particularly interested in the mechanisms that explain the relationship between being bullied and poor mental health. This includes factors such as perceived social support, and threat and challenge appraisals. I am also interested in evaluating interventions used to 1) reduce bullying in schools, and 2) support those being bullied to reduce the impact of their experiences on their mental health.
I would be happy to hear from potential PhD students with an interest in projects related to child and adolescent experiences of bullying, and the relationship between such experiences and mental health.
I have reviewed for a number of journals, publishers, and grant organisations, including: Children and Society, Journal of Adolescent Health, International Journal of Behavioral Development, The International Journal of Bullying Prevention, Journal of School Violence, European Journal of Psychology of Education, School Mental Health, Sage, Palgrave and the ESRC. I am also currently a member of the European Science Foundation’s College of Experts.
