ERASMUS success in Switzerland

Posted on 27 June 2016

Students Anna Wittland and Francesca Gilbey were commended for their achievements during this year's ERASMUS study abroad programme at our Swiss partner university.

Rosemary Smeets Cowan, the Head of International Office at the Schwyz University of Teacher Education in Goldau (PHSZ), praised this year's student visitors for being exceptionally engaging in a wide range of academic and extracurricular activities, commenting: "Anna and Francesca were delightful students to have and were good ambassadors for the University of York."

Francesca summarises her study abroad experience here:

"The exchange programme is a once in a lifetime opportunity and one that you will never forget. I couldn’t have wished for a better experience as I have not only met amazing people, I have also gained new knowledge such as learning a new language, adapting to new cultures and surroundings as well as the confidence to overcome obstacles."

Francesca's observations debunk some national stereotypes: "Whilst we were told that the students would be more reserved and shy, I found that they were extremely friendly and welcoming. The lectures were enjoyable and the teachers and students were very supportive, especially when I didn’t quite understand something fully. The majority of students were confident to interact with us in class such as when we had discussions or group work."

Anna also evaluated her ERASMUS stay in Switzerland as a great success: "Overall, the exchange programme has been one of the most positive, influential experiences of both my academic and personal life. Switzerland is a country unlike any other I have encountered before; it has a tranquil atmosphere and stunning scenery, but an undeniably strong work ethic, making it the perfect location to study and thrive. I thoroughly enjoyed my time at the PHSZ. The staff and students were all extremely friendly and welcoming, making the extra effort to speak in English, which was incredibly thoughtful. I have met and spent time with a multitude of friendly, interesting students from all years and this positive environment greatly contributed to my experience here and made me feel very comfortable in this new environment.

"In terms of lessons, I really enjoyed the emphasis of group work in both classes, which allowed us to meet an interact with new people and gain perspectives on work that I may not have considered individually."

For 2017, the Schwyz University of Teacher Education https://www.phsz.ch/en/ is still welcoming applications under the ERASMUS+ scheme. Undergraduate students who have just completed their first year can apply to spend part of their second year (Spring and Summer term 2017) in Switzerland. This is a unique opportunity! The deadline for applications is at the end of July.

PHSZ offers courses in English, so students don’t necessarily have to speak German or French to participate in this programme.

Norbert Vanek, the departmental ERASMUS coordinator, says, "Studying abroad is a life-changing experience. Not only does it boost self-confidence, independence and ambition, it also broadens cultural and social perspectives, helps to develop language skills, enhance employability and build up personal and professional networks."
