The University of York academic has received the award for services to international development in the Queen’s Birthday Honours.
Dr Bob Campbell was a full-time member of staff of the University from 1978 to 2005.
During his time at York, Dr Campbell developed an interest in international development and established academic links with universities in Namibia, South Africa and Swaziland. He also chaired the International Student Committee.
Currently a volunteer with Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO), Dr Campbell has completed placements in Ethiopia, Cambodia and South Sudan, and recently returned from a second placement in Myanmar. In both South Sudan and Myanmar he helped to develop VSO Country Education Programmes.
Dr Campbell said: “I am very pleased to receive this honour. I see the award not just as mark of personal achievement but as symbolic of the contributions that VSO volunteers make to international development through sharing knowledge, skills and experience with local colleagues and organisations.
“The University is a strong supporter of volunteering and I am just one of several former members of staff who have contributed their York experience to the work of VSO.”
In January 2015, Professor Robin Millar, Emeritus Professor in the Department of Education, was awarded an OBE in the New Year Honours List, for outstanding contribution to science education over 40 years.
