EUROSLA annual conference takes place in York

More than 260 international language experts met at York for the 24th annual conference of the European Second Language Association (EUROSLA).

Hosted by the Centre for Language Learning Research in the Department of Education, the event, held in the Ron Cooke Hub from 3-6 September, started with an early career researcher day, and included a Language Learning round table event and conference dinner at the National Railway Museum.

The first ever EUROSLA Distinguished Scholar Award was awarded at the conference to Professor Vivian Cook, the founder of EUROSLA and also a visiting professor in the York Department of Education.

Chair of the conference organising committee Dr Danijela Trenkic said: The conference was a wonderful success, well attended by both established and earlier career scholars.”

Vice President of EUROSLA Martin Howard added, “Excellent organisation, location, and academic and social programmes - it was thoroughly enjoyable. Thanks to all involved.”

Plenary speakers included:

  • Natasha Tokowicz (University of Pittsburgh),‘Translation ambiguity in language learning, processing, and representation’;
  • Albert Costa (Universitat Pompeu Fabra), ‘Those who know nothing of foreign languages, know nothing of their own’;
  • Sharon Unsworth (Radboud University Nijmegen) on ‘Age and input in language acquisition: Insights from children growing up with two languages’;
  • Leah Roberts (University of York), ‘Grammar, parsing and second language acquisition’.
