Creating Citizenship Communities

CRESJ members are co-authors of a new book focusing on how education can help young people understand contemporary society.

Creating Citizenship Communities, due to be published in July, follows a national project funded by the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation and conducted as part of a partnership between the National Foundation of Educational Research and the Department of Education at the University of York.

The authors analyse data from young people and teachers to explore what they understand by citizenship and community and what they currently do, and would like to do, to promote more effective learning and engagement.

On the basis of this research, the authors make recommendations to enhance levels of understanding and opportunities for engagement in citizenship communities.

Authors

Ian Davies is Professor of Education at the University of York, UK.

Vanita Sundaram is Senior Lecturer in Education at the University of York, UK.

Gillian Hampden Thompson is a Reader in Education at the University of York, UK.

Maria Tsouroufli is a Senior Research Fellow at the Centre for Policy Studies in Education, London Metropolitan University, UK.

George Bramley is a Research Fellow at the University of Birmingham, UK.

Tony Breslin is Director of the consultancy Breslin Public Policy and Chair of the awarding body Industry Qualifications.

Tony Thorpe is an Education Consultant and former teacher.
