The 1980s saw the Department of Education take further steps to establish itself as an influential centre of education research. The Centre for the Study of Comprehensive Schools was set up in January 1981 and The World Studies Teacher Training Centre was also established in 1982. This new centre would provide training in multi-cultural education, human rights education and development education.
In 1983, the University of York Science Education Group (UYSEG) was formed. This research group would go on to have a huge impact on the way that science is taught in schools both in the UK and internationally.
The University of York and the Department of Education celebrated their 20th anniversary year in 1983.
