By the 1970s the Department of Education was firmly established as one of the leading centres of education teaching and research. The Department set about forging connections to other institutions both in the UK and overseas. Staff from York attended academic conferences in Europe, North America and further afield. The Department also welcomed students and academics from across the world. The international dimension to the Department is something that continues to this day with students and staff coming from across the globe to study and work in York.
In 1973, Harry Ree stepped down as Head of the Department and took a teaching job in a comprehensive school in London. Ian Lister, who had been with the Department of Education since 1967, became the new Head of the Department.
