The science of glycobiology has developed rapidly in recent years. It is now known that carbohydrate chains attached to proteins and lipids (glycoproteins and glycolipids) have a marked influence on the physical, chemical and biological properties of these molecules, and that carbohydrate structures can act as signals or recognition markers. <p>Two years ago, investment from the <a href="http://www.bbsrc.ac.uk/">Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council</a>, <a href="http://www.ogs.com/">Oxford GlycoSystems Ltd</a>, and the <a href="/">University of York</a>, enabled us to establish a laboratory dedicated to studying glycoproteins.
