Re-imagining the Sacred

In 1517, Martin Luther unleashed religious revolution across Western Europe. Five hundred years after this Reformation, the effects are still felt today. Central to this movement was the language used in worship reflecting diverse theological opinions. Join Brian Cummings of the University of York as he explores pre and post Reformation sacred language in relation to the Book of Common Prayer.

Brian Cummings is Anniversary Professor in the Department of English and Related Literature at the University of York. He received his BA and PhD at the University of Cambridge, where he became a Fellow of Trinity College. Before moving to York he was Professor of English at the University of Sussex, where he co-founded the Centre for Early Modern Studies.

Brian has held Visiting Fellowships in Toronto, Los Angeles, Munich and Oxford. From 2009-12 he held a Leverhulme Trust Major Research Fellowship and in 2007 he was a British Academy Exchange Fellow. He was elected a Fellow of the British Academy in 2016.
