The Annual Patrides Lecture: “Picnicking in Eden”: Gardens of the mind in fiction and life-writing

The Centre for Renaissance and Early Modern Studies and the Department of English and Related Literature are delighted to welcome back to York this year the distinguished author Dame Hermione Lee, President of Wolfson College Oxford, renowned for her work on life-writing, including the best-selling Virginia Woolf (1996). 

Starting from an essay by C. A. Patrides on Marvell and gardens, and moving rapidly into the 19th and 20th century, the talk will look at the gardens, both real and imaginary, of the women writers whose lives Dame Hermione has written (including Willa Cather, Edith Wharton, Virginia Woolf and Penelope Fitzgerald), as sites of memory, nostalgia, emotion, and ordering.

The lecture will be followed by a reception and an opportunity to meet Dame Hermione. The reception will be held in the Treehouse, Berrick Saul Building and you are warmly invited to join us.
