Wednesday 18 June 2014, 12.00PM to 2pm

Speaker(s): Led by the Cabinet of Curiosities, CREMS' postgraduate forum

Material culture is playing an increasingly prominent role in the study of the early modern period. Objects, materials, and landscapes of the past contain valuable information about the contexts in which they were made, used, and/or discarded. However, inanimate objects do not willingly give up their secrets. As a result, disciplines concerned with interpreting the material past (both extant and ephemeral), make use of a broad range of methodological and theoretical approaches to understand it.

This round table meeting seeks to take advantage of the interdisciplinary nature of CREMS to elicit fruitful discussion concerning the study of material culture in the early modern era. We will explore methodological and theoretical approaches to material culture, as well as share and discuss the advantages and challenges inherent in our chosen modes of inquiry. The round table welcomes and encourages discussion on a variety of disciplinary approaches to the material world, including, but not limited to: archaeology, anthropology, book history, sensory history, sociology, re-enactment, museum studies, and the history of science, medicine, and technology. The discussion aims to provide attendees with new and/or enhanced ways of thinking about the material past by discussing  common interests across disciplines, topics, and time periods.

Participants who engage with material culture in their studies are encouraged to come to the meeting prepared to speak on their topic: their methodology, theoretical frameworks, and their results (even if just preliminary). However, the meeting is open to all who wish to attend.

Overall, this promises to be an enjoyable foray into one of the most fascinating resources that the period has to offer.
