Information for students

Undergraduate and on-campus postgraduate taught students

Welcome!

The Department of Computer Science at York is your academic home while you're here. We're a friendly, active department with a strong focus on high-quality teaching and research across a wide range of areas within the field of computer science.

A big part of what we do is centred on developing and understanding computational systems that are:

  • Safe for people to use - from large-scale systems like air traffic control to personal technologies such as medical infusion pumps
  • Ethical in supporting positive outcomes for individuals and society through responsible use of information, computation and resources
  • Secure in helping to protect people, organisations and nations from misuse, whether accidental or deliberate.

This focus underpins much of our teaching and research, and you'll see it reflected across taught modules, research, and the wider work of the Department.

We're proud of our reputation for both teaching and research but, most importantly, we want you to feel supported and to get the most out of your time here. Take advantage of the opportunities available, get involved where you can, and don't hesitate to reach out if you need help or advice.
