Information for students

Undergraduate and on-campus postgraduate taught students

Welcome!

York’s Department of Computer Science is a world-class centre of excellence for teaching and research in Computer Science.

Our vision for Computer Science at York is to lead on education and fundamental research into the development and engineering of safe, ethical and secure computational systems for the amelioration of human life and conditions. Here, we mean:

  • Safe for people to use, whether these are large scale infrastructure systems like air traffic control or personal devices like medical infusion pumps
  • Ethical in that they improve individual and social conditions through effective use of information, computation and resources
  • Secure, protecting people, organisations and nations from the incorrect use of such systems whether intentional, accidental or inadvertent

We believe that this vision reflects the unique strengths of Computer Science at York, which we are enthusiastic to communicate to our students and, through you, out to the wider world.

We are proud of our reputation as one of the top Computer Science Departments in the country, both for our research and for our teaching. I hope that you will enjoy your time as a member of our Department and that you will be able to take full advantage of all the different opportunities that the Department and the University have to offer.

Professor Iain Bate, Head of Department
