Facilities in the Department of Computer Science
The Ian Wand Building is the centrepiece for our student community and provides relaxing study spaces, dedicated teaching laboratories, and a hardware laboratory.
Our building also houses several research labs. The Home Laboratory, where the Human-Computer Interaction research group undertake much of their research, along with their multidisciplinary partners; and our Systems Across Scales laboratory and darkroom, used by the Vision, Graphics and Learning Group.
Study and teaching spaces
There are lots of study spaces around the Department. The Pod is our main work and social area, and includes our common room and two large teaching spaces. The Department also holds a variety of events here for students which, in the past, have included challenges, hackathons and quizzes.
There are breakout spaces on each floor with sofas and tables, which are great for informal meetings.
We have a number of exhibitions around the building showing a range of interesting items and historical computing artefacts.
Laboratories
We have one hardware and four software laboratories with professional-grade facilities that you'll use throughout your studies, depending on the modules you choose.
Our building also contains a range of hi-spec labs that are used by our research teams, including interaction labs with facilities for research and teaching in human-computer interaction, usability and games research.
Research centres and facilities
Our research centres span several departments and reflect how we collaborate with researchers from different subject areas.
These centres enable us to work across disciplines and with industry to tackle major challenges that face computer science.
