Professor Susanne Bødker

Aarhus University, Department of Computer Science

Thanks, this is a real honour.

Susanne was born in 1956 in Randers, Denmark. She comes from a non-academic family and started university at a time where generally girls were not considered much fit for that. Aspiring to be a math teacher, she started there, soon to find out that the upcoming field of Computer Science was more interesting. It was, however, first when spending time at Xerox PARC in 1982 that she found female role models and this made her believe in an academic career. Academically she has generally managed, despite making many ‘wrong choices’ in her career, at least when seen with today’s standards: She has spend most of her life in the same university, she became a single parent, and she prioritises an active life with other people and has lived in the same co-housing arrangement for over 30 years. She is now a happy grandmother and considering how retirement can be combined with the best of academic life.

Susanne's impressive academic CV includes:
